Night-Lights and Nearsightedness (A) Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

The researchers at University of Pennsylvania were curious to find out whether eye growth might affect and bring about an increased risk of myopia (nearsightedness). Eyes grew rapidly after birth, but myopia generally did not develop until later in life and arose from postnatal eye growth that was excessive.

There was an experiment on chicks that concluded with the findings that exposure to light do result in increased eye growth. They wondered whether the same might be true for humans. Researchers were startled with their findings and might explain the increase in myopia rates during the last two centuries. The B case gives the results of a follow on study performed by the Ohio State University.
