Microsoft’s aQuantive Acquisition Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

This case introduces students to the subject of acquisitions and mergers. At the time when Microsoft bought aQuantive there was a mixed reaction by investors and analysts on whether shareholder value would raise. Finally, the trade turned out to be a colossal failure, and Microsoft received a large quantity of bad press.

This case allows the students to discuss the company's grow strategies (through mergers and acquisitions vs. organic growing) from both an economical standpoint and through the bookkeeping lens. The case offers a chance to introduce accounting for mergers and acquisitions, i.e., purchase price allocation rules, and other special accounting problems associated with mergers and acquisitions in the internet advertising setting.
