Merging Esso Iceland and Bilanaust (B) Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Hermann Gudmundsson, the innovative chief executive officer (CEO) of both the Esso Iceland (provider of fuel and lubricants) and Bilanaust (an automotive spare parts retailer) was beginning to develop an organizational strategy to carry the two businesses forward for the the next couple of years time period.

His superseding alarm was to generate value for themselves and the customers they serve, and Gudmundsson measured several method to reach that aim: should each firm be directed and managed on a stand alone basis, or would a proper amalgamation bring the hoped-for synergies? He decided that the best approach would be to get an accurate image of the talent existing in both organizations but was unsure of the finest procedure to sort, rank and assess the talent existing in each of Bilanaust and Esso Iceland. He desired to create a list of objectives for the assessment program and procedures to apply the findings.
