MARIE JACKSON: REVITALIZING RENFIELD FARMS Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

MARIE JACKSON: REVITALIZING RENFIELD FARMS Case Solution

ORGANIZATIONAL PROBLEMS

After the implementation of three strategic priorities, there is still some confusion between employees, because each brand has initiative it wants to pursue. The company has wide product portfolio of product with 4 brand groups each. Several products fall in each brand group, it is really difficult for a company to develop a single well oriented strategy. This is why there is a lack of agreement and consensus on one strategy but every division is trying to do what is best for their own division, which requires a decentralized structure the one followed by Donald Franklin.

Secondly, different ideas from different business units also resulted in disorganized chain of command from CEO Marie Jackson. There is a need of agreement on the issues, which are very important for the future success of Renfield; there is a need of dedication from every division for the ultimate success of whole organization. The company is also considering the option to further expand itself outside natural food market, which seems to be good idea. However, there are emotional values and heritage attached to it and many within organization oppose this idea to expand in other areas. Many key employees think that expanding into other areas will destroy the heritage and traditional values of Renfield and on the other hand, it is now a growing need of the business to diversify in other areas to neutralize its overall risk. This is because current natural food market is getting saturated day by day, majority of the food segments of Renfield are either facing decline in sales or operating at loss.

On top of this, there is also another issue of successfully implementing the change and new direction proposed by Marie Jackson, there is growing need to create bond with key employees, which could drive such change she is expecting to happen at Renfield. There is need of trickle down effect from top management, which will in turn give the probability of the change under consideration.

Divisional structure is supposed to bring specialization within the groups but that is not happening.

BEHAVIOURIAL PROBLEMS

It appears from the case that Marie Jackson adopted the approach to gather ideas from Renfield employees. She is dependent on them to foster positive change in the organization, she is demonstrating a “transformational style” of leadership where she is working with the employees to identify the needed change. This style is very effective when this style was followed by previous leaders in the organization; since normally, the employees are used to receive instructions from management and give targets to different business divisions to achieve required target....................
