Managing Diversity at Cityside Financial Services Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Managing Diversity at Cityside Financial Services Case Solution

Being a consumer bank in disguised, Cityside financial services provided its services to African American urban community and a more prosperous, mostly white clientele. In order to match the sex and racial makeup of its staff to that of its customers, Cityside's sales division executed an aggressive affirmative action hiring plan.

The plan succeeded in increasing the numbers of girls to 50% of all employees and of African Americans to 25% of executives and 53% of middle managers. Cityside ran a prosperous company with high customer satisfaction rates that were broadly perceived as a successful model of the "business case for diversity." Hence, the bank's leadership was mystified to find growing resentment and demoralization among its African American workers.
