Leaders Wanted: Chinese Athletic Vancouver Association Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Statement and Analysis of the Problem

The problem that has been identified in the case “Leaders Wanted: Chinese Athletic Vancouver Association” is of the leadership vacuum that has evolved at the nonprofit organization Chinese Athletic Vancouver Association. CAVA had to deal with the loss of their president Kai Lin, who was leaving the position of President as he had the job opportunity in Honk Kong. The Vice President Clarence Chan was looking to develop a plan where he needed to find a solution of leadership vacuum and succession which was planning a major threat at VACA. Although Chan was to take the role of the president once Lin leave but he also had to introduce and develop a plan for leadership which could be implemented at CAVA in the future.

Root causes of the problem

The root cause of the problem at CAVA has to be the nature of the organization. Basically CAVA is an NGO which had the vision to provide basketball games to the entire Chinese community in a much formalized manner in Vancouver. Because the organization was a non-profitable one and none of the members in the organization were looking to pursue their careers in a nonprofit organization therefore, it is a fact that CAVA will generally face the problem of loyalty amongst its members or the employees. Therefore, the main problem or the root cause of this problem has to be the factor of not necessarily the loyalty but the fact that the organization business model does not provide an attractive and lucrative career path for the members especially the leaders. Basically at CAVA the members did not have a career path and they had better opportunities out there in the market to pursue.

Differentiate short term/immediate problems from long term problems

The immediate or the short term problem for CAVA is to fill the vacuum of leadership at CAVA. Since, Lin has resigned from the post of President, CAVA needs to fill the gap that has been created. Chan the vice president who is expected to take over as the president has to find a replacement for the role of the Vice President on immediate basis. Secondly, the long term problem for CAVA and Chan is to find a permanent solution to the leadership vacuum or a problem that has been faced by the organization quite regularly since its establishment. The long term problems which Chan was facing was the fact that it had to find the solution as to how he could find, attract and develop leaders who can serve the nonprofit organization CAVA. The difference between the two problems is quite connected to each other where the short term solution is to find a replacement for the leadership gap and the long term problem is to find a permanent solution to the problem at CAVA.

Decision facing the leader

The decision that is faced by the leader Chan at CAVA is to find the solution to the problem of finding leaders who can take up the role of managing the association in the future. The decision is to motivate members who can be attracted at CAVA and can be trained and developed in a way where they can become potential leaders for a long period of time. It is quite a difficult problem because there are no set criteria for the association and no one is willing to stay at CAVA for a long time.

Detailed analysis of the problem

The problem that has been identified at CAVA is of a leadership vacuum. Since it is the main problem where CAVA is unable to retain leaders is generally because of lack of motivation at the association. People serve as leaders for a limited or short duration of time and then eventually move on once they find a better option or a career path for themselves. It is indeed because of the unclear hierarchy and an unclear system of operations at CAVA. It can be said that the association is run by the individuals rather than a committee or a board who can direct the team to perform on a set scale or criteria. Chan who himself is looking to move on needs to find a solution of the problem. Therefore the main problem and its solution is directly proportional to the fact that CAVA...................
