UNDERSTANDING MIXED METHODS RESEARCH

There are various numbers of methodologies to analyze the data related to research and thus can be qualitative and quantitative as well. It is primarily based on the philosophical assumptions that lead towards a specific direction of data collection and analysis. These analyses of collecting data can be done either through qualitative or quantitative analysis. The basic reason behind combining the two methods is to make the most from both the approaches and make the overall research analysis more reliable and authentic. Many of the researchers believed that the combination of two approaches provides better analysis than the single one. Quantitative data can be defined as information that is limited and concise.

It is said to be the one that can be measured and calculated easily. It is based on calculating data through various statistical tools and analysis like SPSS. On the contrary, qualitative data are based on open questions and is not limited to numbers and thus are not quantifiable. In open-ended qualitative approaches, individuals can have the opportunity to give freedom to the respondents (Greene, Caracelli & Graham, 2005).

Race, Ethnicity, and Health: A Public Health Reader

Initially, the primary issues that have been faced around various countries and especially in the United States was related to race i.e. being black or white. As the time passed, the demographic composition in the U.S has changed by the addition of Latinos and Asian Americans. The chapter also discussed the demographic model that was based on the fact that there are four basic stages of economic development that are the pre-modern stage, early industrial, mature industrial and post-industrial stage. In addition to ethnic transition, another vital trend that has emerged was the improving health profile of the Americans. Despite this, the disparities among the racial and ethnic groups remained the same.

Another topic that has been discussed and analyzed in the book was the differences between U.S and Foreign-born women in major U.S racial and ethnic groups.  Foreign born mothers have shown a better pregnancy outcomes than their US born counterparts.

Another topic covered in this reading is related to genes with respect to racial differences in health.  The reading shows that the race is an inadequate and even a harmful way to think about the human biological differences while analyzing various ethnic groups and minorities.  Further, there were six myths attached related to the genes and is linked with an individual’s health.

In addition to that, it also covers a topic that is based on the color line and shows that race and color matters in the elimination of health disparities.  As a social category, race remains the most potent force for mobilizing the American people against injustice (Thomas & Lydia, 2012).

In the book of mix method research, the author has analyzed and evaluated the differences between the two research approaches that are qualitative approach and quantitative approach. In terms of methodology, it is based on the collection, analyzing, and a combination of both approaches to drawing more strong and valid conclusion. The author believes that one can have a better understanding and implementation of their researches when they combine the two approaches together. It is based on rationality along with gut feelings and emotions to identify the results.

In analyzing black lesbian, high dependence and reliance on one of the mental constitution has been made, the major benefit is the opportunity to make new research about the knowledge that reflects in the paper. The author has used the research paper of Bowleg, 2003 to make an illustration about the black women that are lesbians and encounter with various methodological challenges regarding the concept of intersectionality.
