Geo Technical Site Inspection And Analysis Report Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Abstract

520 Park Avenue of the New York City in New York State is the prime location for construction purposes. The group was given the task to explore the particular site for it soil analysis and soil characteristics along with other key investigations to make.

The group took the challenging task and has gathered valuable information and results using various techniques that will be useful in future prospects. The report includes the drill rig asserted pressure on the site and the pressure when it rotates a total of 360 degrees. It also produces a valid calculation of the settlement in the rig for the fill stratum of the soil.

The soil that was collected during the drilling process is used to know the soil composition and bedrocks in the ground. This is then used to present the soil analysis and also the soil profile for the particular site. The characteristics of the soil are determined in the field test and are used to find various variables of the soil taken from various locations.

An overview and discussion about the secant pile system that was calculated using splice of the particular site is also presented. The pros and cons of the lateral excavation support and secant excavation support internally and externally are presented and discussed. The drill shaft that is then needed to be designed is presented along with its constructability aspects and its format of construction.

1-     Introduction

1.1  General

The report is prepared in order to present the finding and results of the investigation carried out for the soil features and PROPERTIES AT THE 520 PARK AVENUE OF THE NEW YORK CITY.

1.2  Project Description

The project is designated to the groups of individuals in the course to be able to implement the knowledge regarding the soil analysis. The project requires to design a simple caisson type 1 drill shaft after analyzing the soil properties.

1.3  Purpose and Scope

The first step in order to design any particular building design is to investigate the area of the design along with its parametric values like boundaries and their lengths. It is also important to find the ground conditions and underground conditions as well. A design for any building should be made once the engineer has the underground testing data and measurements of the things the ground consists of. A vacant area would require to be first investigated using drill rigs that would extract the information underground. The scope of the project can be presented in the following order;

  1. The foundation of the design is important to the building structure, the soil is investigated for extracting the information as to which of the following foundations; shallow or deep, are required,
  2. The drill unit that is used to extract the information can also be used to calculate the pressure that the particular rig is applying on the soil once in static or rotating conditions.
  3. The sufficient knowledge to find out the settlements predication of the soil.
  4. A pictorial representation of the soil and the underground material of the particular site.
  5. Secant Pile wall analysis has to be conducted.
  6. The drill shaft design is to be constructed using the caisson type one method.
  7. Support system of the particular site has to be investigated to make sure drill shaft design is accurate for the particular soil foundation of the site...............
