The author asserts that great invention is frequently produced as of a capability to harmonize opposing tensions. Such as the pressure to circumvent failure as well as the need to take threats; or the demands of getting results fast and the freedom to look for 'the greatest method'. Although, all-too-often, the artful balancing of opposing tensions goes by the wayside, and compromises are made that sub-optimize efforts to produce value. He familiarize and substantiate a technique that prevents compromise: deliberate goal conflict. He supplies two examples of this approach in order to illustrate exactly the way that it works, such as the cut from the annals of innovation at Toyota.
