Erik Peterson Case Study Solution

INTRODUCTION:

The purpose of this case study is to analyze the management skills and qualities of the new general manager of the Green Mountain Cellular, which is a subsidiary of the Cellucomm cellular organization. This will require an in-depth and comprehensive analysis of the situation at the headquarters of the subsidiary in Hanover as the organization was already facing severe issues before the arrival and joining of the new general manager Peterson.

This needs to be looked at in order to realize and summarize how much the new general manager has been able to improve the situation as the person in charge of the division of the organization and this will reflect his leadership and management skills.

The role of senior management of the Cellucomm will also be looked at in terms of their assistance to the new general manager and what improvements could be made to the present assistance and support structure of the organization.

QUESTION 1:

Eric Peterson is the new general manager of the green mountain cellular organization of the Cellucomm cellular company and he is faced by some serious challenges in the working structure, operations effectiveness and efficiency related issues in the subsidiary. The organization is yet to become operational and it is not providing services to the customers in the licensed markets yet because of the slow nature of the launching process of the construction of the systems of the company.

The general manager of the organization is relatively new to the role of the general manager and management control and in the initial phase of his career, he is encountered by sever challenges and issues that act as a barrier in the performance of the organization as well as for him as he is the general manager of the company. Some of the key issues of the organization that are critical to the performance of the general manager of the organization are discussed below.

  • Ineffective reporting system of the company.
  • Interpersonal issues with the chief engineer of the organization and lack of understanding.
  • Ineffective inventory control system of the company.
  • Ineffective team of the subsidiary.
  • Delays in the system construction due to subcontractors of the company
  • Absence of the experienced personnel in the upper management.
  • Lack of co-ordination with the parent organization of the subsidiary.

PROBLEMS FOR ERIC PETERSON FROM INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTOR TO MANAGER:

After looking at the above mentioned issues and challenges of the organization for which Peterson has been appointed the general manager, it can be very well realized that the general manager is relatively fresh and young in the telecommunications industry and in such short time he has been exposed multiple issues and challenges of the organization that are diverse in nature.

These issues are management issues, operational issues, authority and influence issues along with the issues in synergizing the goals and objectives of the organization. Although the general manager of the organization has remained optimistic and steadfast in dealing with these issues of the organization to which he has been assigned the responsibility however, he has thus far failed to implement an effective strategy and policy that delivers such purpose to him as there are severe issues that still remain in the organizational structure.

The general manager is trying his best to promote and improve his team in their roles and operations by pursuing one on one discussions with them however, they are unwilling to listen and adopt as per his suggestions and requirements. The most critical reason for this is that Eric Peterson has no prior knowledge and technical expertise of the systems and technical operations of the company and therefore, he receives less acknowledgement and respect from his employees and workers.

QUESTION 2:

Reporting line

Firstly, the main causes of these problems are that there are unclear reporting lines since Peterson was unsure and then finds that he is reportable to someone which he has not expected.

Internal problems

There is a serious issue with the chief engineer Curt Andrews as Curt has no administrative abilities and he only got promoted based on his technical knowledge. Due to this, many problems are raised which then require Peterson’s attention to be solved; however Curt always shows lack of co-operation too.

Poor co-ordination

There is lack of co-ordination and poor communication among the staff which results in poor operations and morale.

Inexperience management

There is lack of experience on the part of the Peterson who is the new general manager as well as hardy was also inexperienced….
