Difficult Conversations: How to Address What Matters Most Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

In this interview, dialogues writer and expert Doug Stone describes the ways in which our identity is threatened by dialogs that are difficult. We all see ourselves a certain manner, he says: 'I'm a hard worker' or 'I'm a caring manager' -- and the dialogs that feel the most challenging for us are the ones which have the potential to jeopardize that self image.

He shows that we make some orderly thinking blunders when we are determining whether to avoid or raise an issue with someone: we tend to focus on the costs of raising the problem as well as the benefits of averting it, but we do not think about the advantages of increasing it and the costs of preventing it. He goes on to describe the best way to reap these benefits via 'learning conversations', provides tools for coping with difficult conversations, and guides on the best approach to deliver messages that are tough.
