Consensus VS Majoritarian

With modernization and industrialization, the concerns about the state representative democracy in both eastern and western Europe are on an increasing trend whether it curtails rise of population, the increase of illiberal tendencies or the expression of outright antidemocratic sentiments, the frequency and extent of threat is growing. This has made the world question about the best political system that saves the country’s integrity and supports globalization.

The 21st century is a century of high turbulence and instability when analyzing the scope of politics and economic condition. One system cannot cater all the needs of a country towards protecting the integrity, culture, nationality and also maintaining the connection with the outer world while enhancing the practices of globalization.

The whole current scenario started up with the start of “globalization”. In later research, it will be discussed how globalization has affected the countries to change or amend their political system in order to maintain a balance between the two extremes- globalization and National Integrity.

Globalization started after industrialization, this phenomenon encouraged countries to exchange goods that it could not produce, while also finding effective fields and dimensions of doing businesses, like outsourcing the functions to cheap labor countries, it involved countries in exchanging the human resource because of cost efficiency and cost leadership, while some countries in-sourced specialized human resource to fill the industry with high expertise, this phenomenon altogether gave rise to vast cultural diversity , which immensely pressurized the political systems of the countries to develop policies in regard of cultural diversity.

Due to cultural diversity, the countries experienced vast workforce with different skill sets working at different wages and making the businesses flourish. Like in the US, the culture diversity is on high extent, which has shaped the political system of the US as Consensus Democracy.

For countries like the US, Consensus democracy is best fitted philosophy to shape the political system, as it takes into account the opinions of every group present in the country to vote and elect their representative in Parliament, preventing authority or empowerment of any single group. This system leads to equal voting rights and prevention from empowering a single group, which may become a threat for the country in later times (Popp).

However, if the case of European Union is considered, the political system is developed on the democratic philosophy of “majoritarian”. From the start, Europe has worked on this philosophy, take examples of Adolf Hitler, Mussolini, Mark linen etc, they all belong to one party which formed the majority of the country and changed the game of global markets exponentially. To understand how the majoritarian philosophy led to such drastic changes in history and has stepped into modern times as well, we need to build a clear rationale on the history of European Union (Menocal, 2011).

Europe is largely occupied by 28 countries collectively known as European Union, the members of EU are big enough to welcome high flux of immigrants. Over the last two decades, the EU has opened its gates for other part of the worlds, which has increased the amount of FDI and helped it to survive the world financial crisis. EU constitutes a single policy system which is the Majoritarian democratic system, which empowers a certain group to stand up and raise their voice against anything they feel is not right, and then the decisions are made on that majority group decision (The london School of Economics and Political science).

Take the example of Brexit, it happened just because a single group of white collar Britishers, non-graduate people given the diverse culture and high immigrant flow, which has affected their markets and that their voice has been stressed under the voices of the new educated class of Britain which is apparently causing their integrity and nationalism to slide away and become a history only (Economics, The london School of). However, the group stood up, and managed to take Britain away from the European Union, though it was not the decision of the majority of the population but the political system – majoritarian allowed the group to prove and take Britain away from European Union. This decision caused Britain’s industry to face a lot of consequences, which may affect the global market immensely.

For instance, Britain is the biggest producer of automobile industry with its major headquarters and facilities located in EU, and EU has been funding the industry of Britain to carry out research and development to flourish the industry however, after Brexit, there are chances that Britain may face heavy taxation and strong regulations, which may shape the whole economy of Britain, and not only Britain, but the effects will be felt on all the automotive industry operating globally; some factors could be pricing, product penetration and market entering strategy (Robert). Moreover, it may also lead to fluctuating employment rate as the economies of the EU are connected. In addition, we look at the reason, which caused this huge global change in markets.

The reason was the practicing Democratic system, which caused the majortarian to win the election, though the thoughts shared by the group were the thoughts of small group of people which managed to become eminent.

The question arises as to what caused the group to speak for separate national identity, globalization enhanced the footfalls of immigrants which replaced the working class of the Britain, which brought in resentment in the hearts of British against the current political system. It made them think as a separate identity as globalization brings had disadvantages, however the initial disadvantage is you lose the place for your citizens in the job market, since the educated non-national takes the place of the residents, the culture gets mixed, leaving its original essence, as well as it causes to expose the investments which could do better for their home country (Economist). These factors altogether contradict the existing political system, which should be designed in a way that it addresses the key concerns of the people living in the host country, while also maintaining a balance between globalization and political system.

Thus, the whole centre point is “political system” which can lead the country to globalize or become a self sufficient country. In political system, there is no clear meaning of democracy, as for every individual democracy means a different thing, since it speaks different agendas, it acts in a different way (HBR), and therefore there are no fixed directions and definition of Democracy. However, there are some elements that make one democratic political system different from other political system, and some of those factors are, liberalism, populism, euroskeptism etc................
