Deborah Cullinan and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

The executive director of Intersection for the Arts, Deborah Cullinan, was recently appointed to a new role as executive director of Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA). The case depicts her work and performance in both roles. In the beginning of the case, she conducts an evaluation of strategic plans of YBCA, and determining the ways to best utilize and further explore the opportunities and challenges.

The existing challenges include the constant push for innovation under her predecessor as the primary cause of staff fatigue; doubtful attitude towards artistic excellence that it might decline due to the increasing concentration on community; would Cullinan had the enough expertise in managing the large firm; the effect on the company’s occupancy and 14 percent of its revenue due to the transforms to the Yerba Buena Gardens complex; a fraught culture by the increasing technology companies and their highly paid workers, which led the various artists and community members to priced out of San Francisco, and transforming the existing culture of the city forever.
