Crown Worldwide: Integrating Corporate Social Responsibility in Business Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Founded in 1965 by Jim Thompson, Group Crown Worldwide ("Crown") began as a small transport company in Japan, moving its headquarters to Hong Kong in the mid-1970s. For 30 years, the Crown has become the world's largest private relocation and logistics company, a success that is primarily due to the insistence of the founders to the high quality of service and unwavering commitment to community development. With a growing concern among customers about corporate social responsibility, the company recognized that CSR should be integrated into corporate strategy and day-to-day business operations to achieve sustainability for both the company and society. In 2008, the Crown appointed its first director of CSR, whose main task was to develop and implement standardized global CSR strategy that will support the crown of environmental and social development initiatives. Various integration of CSR measures have been taken, such as the development of global environmental standards, incentives for employees volunteering, creating CSR communication channels, the development of supply chain management and measurement of CSR. In accordance with the objectives of the UN Global Compact initiative leadership that guided the participants practice responsible business-Crown would also publish sustainability reports each year. Although staff were supportive of CSR efforts, the journey becomes a well rounded corporate citizen is full of difficulties and includes a wide range of stakeholders and multidimensional issues. Without a plan or a framework CSR integration efforts can be daunting, but inaction is not an option in the light of rising CSR expectations.
