Prior to the year 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Chinese individuals were annoyed by repeated disruptions of the Olympic torch relay in Paris on 7 April 2008. Right after the event, LVMH Group, an investor of the seller Carrefour, was implicated by some Chinese web users of contributing cash to the banished spiritual leader of Tibet. The report spread on the web rapidly, resulting in requiring a massive boycott of Carrefour on 1 May 2008.

In spite of the souring public belief, Carrefour did not offer a constant reaction to the public, even after one entire week of the crisis. Additional reports about Carrefour's anti-boycott promos were flowing on the web.
