Bright and Dedicated: What More Do You Want? Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Susan Reynolds, a flourishing auditor with a big-six public accounting firm, was hired as accountant in the bookkeeping department of a medium-sized, highly lucrative motion picture business. Believing that she had been performing satisfactorily, Susan found herself in an entire state of shock upon receiving her first annual employee evaluation.

Although during her appraisal interview, Anita Lockwood, Susan's immediate manager, had admitted that Susan was a valuable accession to the section, a written review that accompanied the interview indicated that she was badly lacking in the interpersonal skills she needed to experience continuing success in her present position as accountant. The case ends with an exceptionally dissatisfied and hurt Susan wondering whether she should try to achieve the amount of social skills needed to function effectively in her present managerial position, or to simply seek employment elsewhere.
