The aim of this exercise is to let students experience a number of prejudices that can be deleterious to tactical decision making. In particular, pupils are prompted to fall into a trick that was confirmatory, and to experience other prejudices like the anchoring and sampling bias.
Although the exercise could be done independently, this is a better vehicle to investigate how some team-level dynamics and structural choices can either raise or decrease the chance of falling into such prejudices. The exercise creates a situation that reflects the one leading to the Challenger disaster.
