BILLY BEANE AND THE OAKLAND ATHLETICES (A): DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL Case Solution

Approach of Billy Beane for Oakland Athletics

The Billy Beane was quite successful in the innovation of the strategic decisions. However as the general manger during 1999 and 2000, he followed different patterns to run the operations as compared to the traditional ways to use. Therefore, he analysed the potential benefit to hire the new talent and to give low compensation in exchange of the out-performance in the league.

He managed Oakland Athletics in the start of his career in the baseball industry, as he implemented different solutions to run the club and used innovative ideas to determine the value of young talent which was undervalued by the market analysts. After the proposed plan, Billy was successful in thenext couple of years by allowing Oakland Athletics to stand in a competitive position.

On the other hand, the club was not successful in the overall performance during the selected years because it was not focusing to hire the experience players due to high payrolls while it was ranked as number one in the cost per win scenario as compared to the other big clubs in Major League Baseball.

The approach implemented by Billy was quite revolutionary for different other club managers asit defined the efficiency and effectiveness of the new players under less value, as well as the clubs wereconcerned about the potential threat of expensive players, who were the successful players but not the match winners. Therefore in order to decrease the amount of investments into the players, many managers tried to implement the same scenario of Billy but not achieved the full results.

In the recent years, many other sports clubs also followed the same approach to reduce the size of cost and to out-perform by introducing the new talent to step against the competitors. The main advantage of Billy’s approach was to handle all the cost and to give a chance to every individual who would have the potential to win the game.

Analysis of Regular season games and post-regular season games

It has been analysed that the Money ball was entirely focused on the selection of players under regular season games and lack to determine the potential benefits of post-season players, who were the match winners of the league. However, the difference between these two tactics was that: regular season games are the matches without knockout, whereas the post-regular season games consist of finals or knock out games.

There are some advantages as well as disadvantages in the selection of players under post-season games, the advantages are the players who could assessed to be the match winning player during the course of action, while the risk was that younger players are not experienced and stand into the big competition with other big players against them, whichwould put pressure of not performing well and unable to overcome the losses.

The other advantages are the low compensation to the younger players under extraordinary talent, which would remain unhidden during the post-season match and allowed to effectively control the club with less risk for huge payroll of the players.

Competitive Response against Oakland Athletics

The competitive response was at peak against the A’s innovation during the period of 1990s to the early 2000. Various studies revealed the similarities of other clubs as compared to Billy’s strategy however, they did not achieve the overall results as Billy did. The Boston Red Sox was one of the club who showed some similarities of innovation in ideas as compared to the Billy’s implementations.

The systematic approach by the president of Red Sox was to follow the same patterns of A’s innovations however, he didn’t handle the entire payroll compensation because of the already hired experienced players who could be the match winners. However, the club won the consecutive victories over the selected years and ranked number two for highest performance.....................
