Barbara Norris GSU Case Analysis

TRANSITION MANAGEMENT:

Barbara should first focus on internal environment of GSU which is deteriorating management strategies. To bring the change, Barbara should evaluate staff work and assign specific duties to maintain work efficiency. Rotating and shifting the work with- in every few days will help Barbara to overcome the complaints of over burdening.(Ortenzio, 2012, pp. 19-25)

INVOLVEMENT AND COMMUNICATION WITH STAFF:

Barbara should conduct meeting and involve staff in her decision making process. Communication with staff will help Barbara to find out that what changes are required by the staff to work efficiently and in the benefit of the hospital. Involvement of staff regarding decision making will boost the confidence of staff and motivate them to put extra efforts for the organization. This will help Barbara to resolve the complaints of staff members by allowing them to confront each other.(By, 2015, pp. 369-380)

MANAGING RELUCTANCE TO CHANGE:

The problem with the staff is lack of skills and experience among them because of the difference between thenumbers of years of experience. As Barbara is highly experienced and skilled with Master’s degree in nursing and administration, she should conduct training and development sessions for the staff as the hospital is going through crisis therefore the hospital wouldn’t be able to afford a training and development workshops conductions for the staff. As an experienced and educated personnel Barbara could train staff regarding technology arriving at GSU and by mentoring junior staff so the gap between the workload of junior and senior staff could be mitigated and burden could be somewhat distributed fairly among the employees.(Jos. H. Pieterse, 2012)

INVOLVING STAKE HOLDERS IN MANAGING CRISIS:

As the hospital is going through crisis because of economic recession soit opted to freeze hiring. In addition with verbal motivation to employees Barbara should convince top management of hospital to motivate employees in this depressing time through some compensation which will disperse the negative assumptions of hospital management among employees. This motivation will help the staff to work efficiently and overtime if needed. Motivating sometimes verbally and sometimes by compensation will help the management to afloat the hospital from this crisis and critical situation. After communicating with top management of the hospital Barbara should take nursing staff in confidence that hiring freeze will be ended and staff will be increased as soon as the hospital manages to come out from the crisis situation...................................
