A Couple Debating Over a New Car Case Study Solution

She looked at him and stared while he started saying till he finished, she looked in his eyes with her eyes filled with tears in her eyes and a little grin on her face. She did wanted to spend time with him, she admitted. But, at that time, all she wanted was to purchase a new car. He desponded and knew it was surely not possible for him to make her agree on dropping the idea of purchasing a new car. At last, He agreed and asked her to find a car of her choice.

She, with great excitement of finding the car that she wanted to own, started reviewing different cars. She had spent about a whole day and night in determining that what car she needed to choice and why to justify in front of her husband so that he might not find any excuse.

According to him, finding out a car would be a different task for her wife to be done. He did not know the intensity of her excitement of purchasing the new car. Here, the discussion started, it was Wednesday morning, she presented with two models description of car. Hegaped at her for a while and asked wasn’t these were the cars that our neighbours had purchased recently? Don’t you remember? You told me about that on Monday night when I returned from office. (Fallacies of presumption – -complex question)

At first, she grumbled but then she said that he was right and she will let him know the other model, better than these ones. She grunted that she had the right to have a better car that would match her dream, so she would be purchasing the car soon. (Fallacies of ambiguity – equivocation).

With growing interest and excitement of her wife, he also started taking interest and finding which car should they buy as they had decided to purchase a car. After two days when they had finished their dinner, they were having warm coffee as those were cold nights, two voice as one were heard saying I want to show you something. Both of them looked at each other with amazement and laughed. He asked her to show what she wanted to show him first, she stood up and brought her laptop from the room and sat next to him and showed the car with its description which she had decided to purchase. Then he showed the car of his choice which selected in consideration with her wife’s wish.

Emma selected Volvo S 60 Cross Country which is quite simple and common vehicle with a combination of features like SUV and hatchback. As it is a cross-over vehicle, offers capabilities of soft-roading and are constructed using uni body structure rather body-on-frame platform that are commonly used in SUVs.

Whereas, James decided to purchase Audi A 3 Cabriolet which is a convertible roadster car with a converted structure of roof allowing enclosed or open-air driving. It also features either like a hardtop roof i.e. retractable or top i.e. soft folding.

Both the cars had remarkable features with latest technology, it became difficult for both of them to decide one. Each of them started telling best features of their selected cars to make the other agree on choose their selected car to purchase. It started all with debating over price difference, reviews, ratings, features etc. She stated Volvo is best because it is easy to use, no complex features. He stated in an argument way that Audi is among the high rated cars and enlisted in the luxurious cars. She interrupted, Volvo is a car with 360 surround view camera, Auto-dimming interior and exterior mirror. He tried to end up the fight over the car with a statement that alright we will buy the car of your choice.

But, the discussion did not end here, the final decision will be on the basis of the test drive, features, technology and other specifications that we want to be available in the car. Additionally, as the purchase of the car is just because you wanted to purchase your car dream, did not mean that I should not meet the standards, comfort, feature, speed and looks plus its colour we have looked for.

She agreed with happy gesture, as her dream of purchasing her dream car was about to be completed. The things that had been troubling them for past whole week had ended up with a mutual decision of purchasing a new car but with mutual understanding. As the car was primarily to be purchased for Emma, but both of them would be using that car. So, both of their satisfaction was necessary. Thus, the thought process of Emma had ended, they had scheduled their meeting with a car dealer on upcoming Sunday provided with deals about the cars they would like to see.

“Explanations of fallacies”

Fallacy of relevance – the red herring

Yeah sure, we will think of it but it is too late now, let’s go to sleep–this statement shows the change in the topic as James had turned the direction of the thought conveyed to him by Emma.

Fallacy of defective Induction – argument from ignorance

I have noticed that you were not paying attention or listening to what I had been trying to tell you. Like I shared my thoughts of purchasing my dream car on Saturday night, you did not respond to it like I wanted you to respond. The other day while coming back from the grocery when we came across to that sports car, I wanted you to understand that I really want that car, may be not the same but one like that. But, I felt like you did not care of what I felt, it was primarily none of your concerns, I had felt that you would have understood my feelings, but, no I was wrong. – This statement was in response to ignorance that she had been facing in the behaviour of her husband.

Fallacies of Presumption – -Complex Question

Wasn’t these were the cars that our neighbours had purchased recently? Don’t you remember? You told me about that on Monday night when I returned from office. –This statement was in response of the car models that she presented in front of her husband.

Fallacies of Ambiguity – Equivocation

I had the right to have a better car that would match her dream, so I would be purchasing the car soon.–This statement showed an argument with herself………..
