This note provides a brief history of measuring return on investment for Du Pont and its close relationship with the management of operations. Du Pont diagram approach to the calculation of return on assets is described, and the graphics are in leaf form for ease of use to persons who are not familiar with financial concepts. Using the ROA and ROE to measure the performance is discussed, and the average of the two measures of best American and Japanese companies are present.
