How the brain makes choices engaging in a change process

The brain needs to make choices in the process of decision-making. There are two aspects or two types of decision making; one is Emotional decision making, and another is rationality. In emotional decisions, the choices are based on feelings whereas, it is expected that in rational decision making, certain facts and figures are taken into account.

Emotional decision making involves feelings such as happiness, sadness, braveness, cowardness, anger, fear and so on. Moreover, Emotional decision making is considered as the fastest type of decision making since there are feelings which sendsignals to the brain and as a result, the reaction of the person is quick. Emotions and feelings do get involved when there is a need to make decisions by evaluating risk and rewards.

An example of this could be a person who is fearful and usually such person does not take risks, and that he/she may accept the few or no rewards upon the decision, which he/shemakesdue to theirfear. On the other hand, a brave person may take the decisions which could involve high risk and high rewards. It is expected that thebraveness of that person may force his/her brain to make a risky decision. Moreover, an angry person's brain may make decisions without even evaluating the level of risks involved.

Rational decisions are based on facts and figures, and they are usually based upon profits, truth and visible impacts of making the decision. For example, a person needs to make an investment and he/she evaluates the choices between investment in two companies where one company offers 10% return on investment, and another company offers 20% return on investment, by looking at the choices that person's brain will be triggeredto act upon the second choice because the facts give information to the brain to make the decision.

In every part of an individual’s life, the brain needs to make a decision, however, the decisions made in young age and older age are different emotionally and rationally. It may be argued that a teenager is very likely to make decisions based on rationality because there are fewer chances that the teenager has faced emotional dilemmas as compared to an older person. The decisions of older people are very likely to be based on emotions because as the person grows older, thenhe/she faces a number of such events, which could affect him/her emotionally and as a result of that, there isconsiderable amount of emotion involved in the person's decision making.

It is possible that sometimes emotions and rationality overlap or conflict in a person’s decision making. For example, a dilemma may occur where a person needs money, and he has a chance to steal, where the facts will make him think about the amount of money involved which he can gain, whereas emotionally he would get a feeling of guilt for doing such an act.

Focused attention changes the brain

The brain can focus on one thing at a time. Moreover, the span of attention changes, as the mind gets distracted into thinking about something else. However, this isn’t something unusual as the brain tends to get distracted by other things. As we move through the passage of life, we tend to think that we focus on ourselves only, however, this is not true because when we go through our daily routine, our mind captures all the surrounding without us paying attention. The destruction of the mind can be made through various means. The term ‘mindfulness’, thus, has been suggested for this given situation. The term ‘mindfulness’ means that an individual is present at the current situation, however, the person tries to pay attention to an other activity but they cannot do the said activity with proper attention.
