As a part of its implementation plan of a green business policy, Starbucks in the following year is planning to carryout accredited program in order to audit all the operating stores that are situated in the US and Canada against the criteria that has been set. The areas that will be of main focus during the implementation of the framework which has been designed and developed by the Starbucks along with its partners are as follows:

Water and energy conservation

Starbucks will invest in new technologies and will upgrade the various aspects of its stores which includes weatherization in order to bring down the consumption of water by 25% percent and the use of energy up to 25%.(Starbucks, G L O B A L RESPONSIBILITY REPORT, 2015)In this way the company has estimated to save up to 1 billion gallons of water each year in Canada as well as in the US.

Renewable energy

In addition to the reduction of the energy use, the company has also shifted its focus towards the advancement of the renewable energy sources. The company either through direct investment or through the purchase of credits will source the energy being used widely across its US and Canadian stores from renewable sources. For the following year, the company will remain as one of the environmental protection agency and will be one of the top ten purchasers of the renewable energy in the US.The purchase of the REC will appreciate the development of the new clean energy that will eventually benefit the wind farm owners by providing them with additional revenues.

Greener cup

In order to shrink the environmental footprint and to manage the impact of business on the environment, substantial improvements has been undertaken to minimize the impact of the waste materials that are being generated in the stores by improving the designs of the packaging and offering reusable cups by establishing local infrastructure for recycling.

Recycling cups is an important aspect of the overall waste reduction strategy. Therefore the company is working with various non-government organizations, competitors, industry associates and policy makers to develop a solution to tackle the challenges and to come up with a common solution. As the company wants the entire packaging to be recyclable. So the consumers can easily access the recycling services whenever they want to dispose of the waste.

Apart from that the company is also planning to increase the number of stores to provide their customers with an incentive to choose a cup that is reusable over a disposable option.

Greenhouse gas emission

The company has been working on the implementation of the climate change strategy since 2004. The strategy was mainly focused on using renewable energy and on the climate adaptation. The company is focusing on building LEED standards in the stores and is also becoming one of the significant purchaser of the renewable energy. They are working with the conservation international in order to incorporate climate smart agricultural practices as a part of the C.A.F.E practices.

In order to continue to track and quantify the footprints, the company carries out an inventory of greenhouse gas emission by using world resources institute. It was identified that more than 80 percent of the greenhouse emission is attributed to the energy usage in the stores, manufacturing plants and offices. In order to increase the saving of the energy the company is now focusing on energy conservation and the purchase of the renewable energy.(Climate Change, 2017)
