In the month of April 2007, Kristin Richmond tied up her sneakers and started the four mile run to Kirsten Tobey's residence. On Saturday morning, the two cofounders of Revolution Foods (RevFoods), a provider of healthful meals and nutrition education to schools in San Francisco and Los Angeles, felt pressure to finalize a strategy for effectively handling their relationship with Maria Nunez.

Nunez, a powerful and cynical food service administrator, had been undermining the RevFoods plan at Green Academy, a charter school in the Bay Area of California. Tobey and Richmond considered that if they did not address the problem now, their agreement with the school could be annuled, a result that could intimidate RevFoods's standing with additional schools. As the last hill jogged up before reaching Tobey's dwelling, she wondered how best to turn their tense relationship into a productive partnership with Nunez.
