Research proposal Management research project Case Study Analysis

The usage of plastic packaging in supermarkets is an issue which needs to be seriously looked into, primarily for the environmental consequences brought about by the waste it creates and the negative health implications it may have had not only on consumers, but also on the general public. (Erkan Arı, 2017 )Plastic, that one product which can be found almost everywhere, and which was initially developed to ease our lives and way of living, has now become a common face for environmental degradation. Global production of plastic bag is now at the rate of five trillion annually with plastic wastes showing up even in the darkest depths of the oceans, and much to the shock of everyone it has been also found at polar ice caps. (Doris Knoblauch, 2018)

Recycling is one of the most significant waste management strategies, but it could be considered as the prime example of implementing the industrial ecology concepts.Whereas, in natural ecosystem these products are the only waste.(Frosch R., 1989). The plastic recycling is widely used method for reducing resource depletion and environmental impact. Fundamentally, the high recycling levels with reduction in repair, reuse, use or re-manufacturing most likely allows for a given product service level with low input of material than needed. Undoubtedly, recycling could reduce the usage of material per unit of output and energy, and yield an enhancement in the eco-efficiency. (Enrico Cagno, 2012 )There has never been a cognizant consideration of the impact that is exerted on environment by the plastic usage when produced at today’s expanding and enormous scale. It is estimated that 50 percent of the annual production of plastic goes towards packaging. (Disposable application).

Research Methodology

In the researchstudy, the explanatory research would be used to explain and assess the effect of the independent variable i.e. usage of single use plastic bags on environmentfor understanding the strengths and nature of the relationship of two sets of variables. It would help in developing a model and interpreting the findings and test constructed hypothesis to conduct the study in suitable and appropriate way. The targeted population of current study is comprised often Carrefoursupermarkets and hypermarkets in Qatar, as the country has a recorded a high consumption of single-use plastic bags. However, because of the intensifying call to go ‘green’ globally, it has launched campaigns to curb the plastic use in all of its hypermarkets.

In addition to this, the research wouldplace a major emphasis on the effects of using plastic bags to the retail business operations with the determination of consumer behaviour and attitude and its staff and management. The observable factors would be measured and collected on the basis of the regularity of the customer’s shopping habits. The basic demographic customer profile would include both male and female customers, approximately of the age varying between 22 and 55 years. The average visit of the customers at Carrefour is at least once in a week.

In the research paper, the survey technique would be used to collect and gather the data from the targeted population, using the e-mail contacts, telephonic conversation and physical visits to share specifically designed questionnaire with the participants in ordertoreceive their suitable and appropriate feedback on the shared questionnaire. In addition to this, thestandardized surveyquestionnaire would be used as data collection instrument, and it is designed specificallyfor the research studyregarding staff/ employees and customers. Other methods would also be used to obtain the valuable insights and information, such as:in-store visits and publicly available information. (Internet, magazines, and online articles). Each of the ten Carrefour hypermarkets and supermarkets can be given points to serve as scorecard for their plastic awareness campaigns and initiatives.

Statement of Ethics

I, thereby, confirm that the ethical issues related to this research have been discussed and considered with my supervisor. The proposed research raises serious environmental issues. The collection of data from respondents will take place outside the University premises, and is not be listed as a place not to travel. It will be a global survey which would be taken by using the University approved software. (E.g. select survey).

It is to confirm that I have taken the University approval in order to verify whether my project requires any form of ethical approval or not. I have discussed this with my supervisor and they agree with the outcome of the tool. The integrity and the quality of the research is ensured. I would respect the anonymity as well as confidentiality of the respondents of the research. Also, I would make sure that the participants would voluntarily participate in the research study.

Timeline

The timeline of the plan includes a number of activities and practices, which takes considerable amount of time and efforts to be conducted in an efficient manner. The activities includes; planning anddesigning of research model, developing standardized survey questionnaire, critical observation, gathering or collecting data from study respondents and evaluating& analyzing the valuable data collected from the respondents. Each activity would take a considerable amount of time to be completed. The timeline of the activities or plan is as follows:
