RESEARCH PROPOSAL Case Solution

Aim of the Study

            The purpose of this paper is to identify the challenges and the obstacles, which are faced by Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in South Africa. Furthermore, this paper emphasizes on making solutions for those challenges and obstacles which are faced by the SMEs within the competitive market environment of the country. The solutions would be devised on the basis of the critical success factors which are possessed by the SMEs in South Africa. Therefore, this paper will develop a framework in which the obstacles and the challenges faced by the SMEs would be explained, along with the critical success factors for the SMEs. The overall aim of this study is to identify the key drivers of growth and perform an in-depth analysis of the key drivers of growth which contribute to the economic development in South Africa.

Objectives of the Study

            There are three key objectives of the study which are listed below:

  • The first objective of this study is to identify the factors which are critical for the success of the SMEs in South Africa.
  • The second objective is to identify and analyze the challenges and obstacles which are faced by SMEs in South Africa and which act as a barrier for them to contribute to the economic development of the country.
  • Finally, the third objective of this research study is to identify the possible solutions to all the challenges and the obstacles which are faced by the SMEs.

Background to the Problem

            SMEs play the most crucial role in the economic development of many countries around the world. Therefore, all the governments around the world emphasize on promoting the SME sector in order to promote the economic development and economic growth of their countries. SMEs comprise of about 905 of the business operations in African countries which they contribute to the Gross Domestic Product and the employment of the African countries by around 50%(Ayyagari, 2011). In South Africa, SMEs form 91% of the formalized businesses and they provide employment to 60% of the total labor force of the country.

However, nowadays, it seems that there are a number of obstacles and challenges which are faced by SMEs in South Africa. The business failure rate is also currently high in South Africa. Previously it has been stated that the failure rate of the SMEs in South Africa is between 70%-80%(Ardic, 2011). Therefore, the purpose of this research study is to determine solutions based on the critical success factors to overcome all the challenges and the obstacles which come in the way of growth of SMEs in South Africa.

Problem Statement

            The problem for this research is to identify the critical success factors which have contributed to the success of SMEs and they have played a crucial role in the economic growth of South Africa. Furthermore, the challenges, problems and the obstacles also need to be found which form a barrier between the success and the failure of the new business ventures. The main problem is to devise specific solutions based on the critical success factors of the SMEs in South Africa to overcome all their challenges and obstacles to growth.

Literature Review

            Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play an important role in the economic development and the economic growth of the countries. They are also considered as the main source of output growth and the employment generation in the developed and the developing countries of the world(Barry, 2004).
