Oltre Venture: The First Italian Impact Investment Fund Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

The case focuses on the borders between the impact and enterprise philanthropy investing, describing the transition from Oltre Venture I, among the first cases of venture philanthropy in Europe, among the first impact investing funds, to Oltre Venture II. In particular, the case focuses on the primary challenges Mr. Balbo, which the creator of Oltre Venture, is confronting during the fundraising task for establishing fund II. As impact investing is still on the market, investors are cynical about the mixed (societal and fiscal) nature of the investments. Thus, while requesting the students to support Mr. Balbo in defining a strategy to reach the fiscal close of fund II, the case allows discussing the potentiality of impact investing to become an asset category and the behavior of distinct objectives of investors.
