Jia Wu Goes West Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

The aim of this instance would be to exemplify forecasting with monthly sales data. It is based on historic data for household goods sales in the Uk from January 1997 to December 2011. Students are challenged to calculate a forecast for 2012 sales based on such a model and to produce a model for this data.

There is a companion IESE focus case, ADFC-003 "The Jia Wu Expansion," which describes Jia Wu's earlier expansion to Australia. Even though the approaches used in the present case are more complex, the content of both cases as well as the function are the same. While in the first case, the predictions were based on a linear trend plus a group of multiplicative seasonals, here we discuss two choices: (a) a quadratic trend plus a set of additive seasonals and (b) an additive Holt-Winters model.

This case might be used in several ways: (a) in one session, bypassing one of the two models discussed in this note; (b) in two sessions, including both models; or (c) along with the companion case, using one instance for the quadratic trend and the other for the Holt-Winters procedure. A comparable spreadsheet program or basic knowledge of Excel is demanded. The calculations are presumed to be performed using conventional spreadsheet functions.
