IBM China Development Lab Shanghai: Capability by Design Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Colour cases should be printed in colour, to maximize their effectiveness. When IBM switched from a conventional territory-based transnational organization to what it called a worldwide integrated business, it created its headquarters for "Growth Markets" in Shanghai and "Established Markets" in New York.

This positioned its China Development Labs (CDL) in Shanghai as an integral platform for serving increase markets including the BRIC nations and other fast developing regions. CDL Shanghai had grown to become one of IBM's biggest labs, though fairly young. The case analyzes IBM's early-mover establishment of its corporate research lab and CDL, and through the examination of three product development vignettes looks at the methodical approach taken to the creation of capabilities and laboratory personnel.
