Experiments in Open Innovation at Harvard Medical School Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

This case article explores an experiment in the open innovation applied to the scientific research on the Type 1 diabetes at the Harvard Medical School. In the standard research process, one research team normally carries through each stage of the process -from generating the notion to raising money to carrying out the research and publishing the results.

Harvard Catalyst, a pan-Harvard bureau with a mission to accelerate biomedical research from the lab to patients' bedsides, changed the traditional grant proposal process as an experiment in bringing greater openness into every phase of research. Participation was successfully extended to nontraditional performers. Ultimately, research pathways and 150 new hypotheses were proposed. Teams were encouraged to propose projects on the 12 most promising of these; seven teams are carrying out the research, now. The Harvard Catalyst encounter implies that open innovation principles may be embraced within a well- experienced and established invention-driven organization.
