BJ Lee took many years to understand the most suitable way to browse the patent minefiled that was the international LED industry. When his company was initially spun off from the Industrial Technology Research Institute in Taiwan, he thought the intrinsic nature of a great IP strategy was to create a technology portfolio which was distinct from everybody else.
However in the ensuing two decades of contest and litigation, he came to appreciate some of the nuances that empowered his business to have liberty to practice. This case exposes a few of the learnings from that journey.
