Delivering Innovation in Hospital Construction: Contracts and Collaboration in the UKs Private Finance Initiative Hospitals Program Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

This article examines the relationship between the planning, financing, construction and operation of new hospitals and the design and construction innovations. It focuses on the UK Private Finance Initiative (PFI), where a consortium of private companies to invest, construction and operation of the public hospital sector. PFI was introduced in part to the introduction of increased innovation in the delivery of health care infrastructure. Examples of the eight schemes developed over the last decade show that the model did not result in PFI anticipated benefits of innovation. This is partly due to how risk is distributed among the project participants, and partly the lack of integration between the hospital trust and the consortium.
