In 1997, retail sales begain to fall sharply for Dairy Farm Group of Companies (DFG), a major retailer catering, based in Hong Kong with operations in many major cities in the Asia-Pacific region. Asian economic crisis in 1997 was one of the reasons. However, another major reason was the increased competition from aggressive European and U.S. retailers who are going to gain a foothold in the growing Asian market. DFG realized that to fight the competition and maintain its dominant position in the Asia-Pacific region, it had to change its business strategy as "sales" to "sensing and answers."
