5. CLIENT GROUP OF THESE COMPANIES:

The target group or client group of these company are not entirely but somewhat different in a sense that how much net worth does their target customer holds. The clients group of these companies are discussed below.

· CLIENT GROUP OF FAIRFAX FINANCIAL HOLDINGS LIMITED:

Fairfax Financial Holdings limited is a holding company with investment in different companies. The services of this company includes property insurance, casualty insurance, reinsurance and investment management services. According to its services; this company targets high to medium net worth clients to low net worth clients. Insurance policies are considered by the individuals either of low net worth or high net worth to mitigate the risk.

As an investment management firm, this company tends to target high net worth so that high brokerage can be earned from them. Although it isn’t necessary that it focuses only on high net worth. To increase financial knowledge and gain market capitalization Fairfax also targets medium and low net worth clients.

·         CLIENT GROUP OF ONEX CORPORATION:

Onex Corporation is an asset management company that only focuses on managing private equity funds. As a manager of private equity firm Onex Corporation targets only high net worth clients with specific requirements. These requirement includes that high net worth clients’ risk appetite and liquidity should be suitable with the private equity fund’s nature of risk and illiquidity. These clients include institutional and corporate clients as well. Usually most private equity funds set a benchmark of including high net worth clients with at least net worth of 1 million dollars.

· CLIENT GROUP OF CI FINANCTIAL CORPORATION:

As an investment advisory, consultancy and a brokerage firm; CI Financial Corporation targets all sorts of clients including high net worth, medium to high net worth and medium to low net worth clients as well. The reason for targeting all sort of clients for this company is to enhance financial knowledge amongst individuals and increase its customer base by market capitalization. By increasing customer base and capturing market share the brokerage and advisory services of the company will increase which will result in the increase of its profit.

7 REQUIREMENTS AND CERTIFICATION OF EACH POSITION:

The requirements and certification of the above mentioned positions are mentioned below:

·         EQUITY RESEARCH ANALYST:

  • Graduate or undergraduate degree in Business and Finance.
  • CFA certification is admired.
  • Willingness to enroll in CFA.
  • Research and problem solving capability.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Strong preference to finance and business qualification.

·         FIXED INCOME ANALYST:    

  • Undergraduate or master degree in Mathematics, Engineering or Finance background.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Computer Science or business related field.
  • Knowledge of portfolio management, quantitative methodologies, risk models and tools.
  • Strong technical knowledge of applying statistical and modeling techniques in credit risk environment.
  • Positive, energetic and can-do attitude.
  • Proven ability to leverage data in decision making.
  • Ability to quickly learn new concepts and technologies to clearly explain others.

The positions which holds the greatest interest are Equity Research Analyst and Fixed Income Analyst. These positions support internship, educational and career goals in various ways which are described below:

·         INTERNSHIP GOALS:

The above two mentioned positions which holds greatest interest provides great advantage to furnish and replenish my skills in education as well as enhances practical ways of looking at the educational topics. The internship opportunity regarding these fields will enhance my knowledge and experience to pursue things practically. The software and technology used in these organizations are advanced which will provide learning opportunity that are required by companies for the positions mentioned above.

·         EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

As a student of graduate program, the knowledge and education gained from this program will further enhance if an opportunity to work on these positions arises. The courses and subjects we study and master can be applied in the job description of these positions e.g. Statistics, Management, Financial Studies and Mathematics. The practical way of looking at matters will further enhance our capabilities to understand educational concepts and how they are applied practically.

·         CAREER GOALS:

As the persuasion towards Business and Finance program, these positions will provide me the opportunity to apply the maximum concept and knowledge which I will learn in my educational career. Since my career goal is to advance in the field of research and finance, attaining these challenging positions will allow me to accelerate in my career. It will create willingness and enthusiasm to enroll in CFA charter program. In future, these position will allow me to further accelerate my position as Portfolio Manager, Fund Manager or Hedge Fund Manager. As these future positions require advanced level of skills, expertise and knowledge which can be adopted or learned by starting a career as an Equity Research Analyst or Fixed Income Analyst.

9.DETAILS OF CONTACTING WITH ORGANIZATION AND FUTURE COURSE OF ACTION:

I have contacted Fairfax Financial Corporation to ask them if they can provide me an opportunity to have internship in their investment management department as an Investment Analyst which includes the job description of both the positions i.e. Equity Research Analyst and Fixed Income Analyst.

I called the company and requested the receptionist to kindly transfer my call to the HR department of Fairfax Financial Corporation. She asked me to wait and then transferred my call to the HR department. I expressed my intentions to have an internship in Investment Managing Department. The concerned person in the HR department asked about the graduate program in which I am enrolled, prior job experience and prior internship experience if I had any. They asked about my availability that from when I can join and the schedule of my classes if I have any in my institute. After gathering all the information they told me to wait for shortlisting procedure as they offered regular internship program to students who are graduating or have graduated. They said that they will contact me for an interview if I am shortlisted in the procedure.

My future course of action would be to apply to other potential companies for an internship related to my field of interest. Till then I will  work on developing basic skills and tactics by mastering the subjects I have studied that are related to the job description of internship program I have applied for, so that I can perform and answer appropriately in the interview and thus try to increase my chances to get selected.

CONCLUSION:

The rigorous process of discovering potential companies regarding the field of interest is quite challenging and a great learning experience to distinguish work practically and the education we pursue and subjects that we learn at universities. This research project gave a great learning regarding what organizations requirements are regarding skills, expertise and education and provided an opportunity to excel in these requirements to increase the chances of getting hired as an intern and an employee. This project gives me an idea that what investment management companies offer as product and services, so in order to maintain those services which kind of skills, expertise and education companies require for their employees to have. Overall this research project gave me the idea of how to be a reflective professional and focus on my internship, educational and career goals so that the learner can become prominent in the eyes of the employer with the bright chances of getting hired as an intern or an employee.........
