Case Analysis: Pine Street Inn, Boston’s Iconic Homeless Shelter, Re-think its Strategy Case Solution

Statement of Problem

Pine street Inn is hotel that provides hoteling facilities to its customer and the hotel also offers staying facilities for its guests. It has been mentioned in the case that the major portion of the revenue of the hotel depends on the night stays and those guests who stay for longer times in the hotel.

In addition, the hotel has a significant learning and experience curve over hoteling services while it has also been noted from the case that the major portion of the revenue is being generated from the night stay services. Furthermore, the company wanted to assess the number of customers with different number of night stays in the hotel in order to find out the number of potential customers to devise the strategy.

The center problem, in this case, is regarding declining demand of shelter houses. Demand for shelter houses was declining because of many reasons, and one reason was the opening of a permanent housing scheme for guests from Pine Street. This was cannibalization effect on Pine Street. Another problem was cutting down on cost.

Pine Street's management was trying to reduce expenditure because the decline in public funding. So they had two options for this one was to outsource nursing staff and other was regarding stop of supplying new clothes to guests. Downie was in a leadership position for Pine Street; she was worried about smokers and drinkers as they were not eligible for any government scheme for finding a permanent house, so she was the only source for them. Only Pine Street was the last resort for criminals, mental, smokers, and drinkers.

Therefore, in order to assess the number of potential customers in pursuit of strategy making the management of the hotel has collected a large amount of data which has to be analyzed to find out the relevant answers.

In addition, the company also wants these results to be interpreted properly to find whether which type of customers are more profitable and which type of clients and guests are less profitable. Furthermore, the data has been analyzed in both i.e. qualitative and quantities way to find the results and to interpret the results as well.

The data has been analyzed using measure of central tendency techniques including mean, median and percentages. However, the data has been analyzed in five different categories to make a proper arrangement of the data as per the strategic requirement of the management.

Analysis

Nursing system:

The Nursing run hospital was working in collaboration with Boston health care for Homeless people in Pine Street. Nurses were having their caring model for shelter people. Many of people were not ready for a checkup from nurses that's why nurses use to give foot wash every week to people so that they could be ready for a checkup. In addition to this nurses were also giving relaxing balm service and in return they use to talk frankly with guests to win their trust. So it was quite controversial for many people in Pine Street to leave such outstanding crew of nurses and outsourcing other from abroad. Nurses who were working here in Spine was offered job from other hospitals and government institution because their lay off seemed to be necessary to reduce cost.

Clothing program:

Around $300,000 a year were spent on clothes. These clothes were donated to guest living in shelter service. Downie proposed instead of buying new clothes in such a huge amount we should buy washer and dryers to clean old clothes. But still management was in conflict, but they made one conclusion regarding providing clothes of the little amount with after a long time.........................
