Barcodes, RFIDS, Lemonade and Conversation Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Charged with managing the Mahajan family wealth, he's formed a private equity group that helps develop mid-market businesses. He's also started a few technology-enabled ventures of his own, including a company that failed in its efforts to sell a service that used barcodes that were cloaked and encrypted for document authentication and a successful company that provided information and administrative management support for pharmaceutical clinical trials. Now, apparently with adequate resources to chew over another entrepreneurial enterprise, AM wonders whether to restore the document authentication business, with a turnkey solution or one or more services that would use encrypted RFID tags instead of the older barcode technology.

This teaching case was developed based on interviews with Mr. 'Mahajan' and two other workers. The case provides the opportunity for pupils to inquire operational, strategic and technical uncertainties and challenges related to building a business around a brand novel expertise. For the business schools that are challenging to 'globalize' their curriculum, the case offer the advantage of presenting the point of view of a well connected entrepreneur that is Indian.
