In December 2006, Alcan was the second biggest maker of aluminum on earth, but the business was merging. Alcan had to decide between two offers: to go it alone or to be obtained.

The first offer was from the other and Alcoa from Rio Tinto. Alcoa was the world leader in the generation of aluminum and, like Alcan, was engaged in considerable technological research and development. Meanwhile, Rio Tinto was one of the largest mining companies on the planet, but had minor aluminum businesses and, in technologies or general, few downstream processing plants.
