AIRPORT OPERATIONS ASSIGNMENT Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

AIRPORT OPERATIONS ASSIGNMENT Case Study Solution

Introduction

This report attempts to perform a critical assessment of the airport operations of Japan especially the two main airports of Tokyo that are Haneda and Narita airports. The current position of Ibaraki airport and the potential of the airport for the future would also be assessed. The aviation market of Japan has been experiencing tectonic shifts and the market as a whole is a mature market therefore, the growth of the airports is gradual. New strategies and technological investments need to be made to enhance the effectiveness of the services provided at the airports. Both the major airports of Tokyo are at capacity and therefore, there seems to be a strong need for development of new plans and the immediate implementation of the current plans. The proposed and alternative strategies for Tokyo for serving the point-to-point traffic will also be discussed at the end of this report.

Critical Assessment of Physical Design & Capacity Limitations for Haneda Airport

An airport can be described as the physical site where the actual transfers between the surface mode and air mode is made. Therefore, the airport needs to provide complete space, services and all the facilities that are required for the modal transfer(Horonjeff, 1999). Therefore, if there are limitations regarding the physical designing of the airports and then can lead to delays in flights and other issues(Dempsey, 2002). The airport designing staff needs to take into account the takeoff and landing of the air crafts, handling of the passengers and the land side access of the surface transfer modes. This only can result in an accurate model transfer.

Within the 21st century there have been great changes to the congestion, computerization, privatization, hubbing, route structure etc. Therefore, the aircraft designers need to be more flexible in designing the physical design of the airports for providing consistent services to airlines, cargo and the passengers. Managing the airports flexibly would also enhance the profitability of the airports(Nagata, 2010). If we talk about the physical design of Haneda airport then the Haneda airport’s physical design has been made based on the universal concepts. Assistance services are provided to the elderly and handicapped visitors to the airport.

The design of the airport is made up of sculptural stainless roof of steel clad and it is punctuated with the skylights for providing the natural sun light to the passengers. The picture of the designing is shown in exhibit 1 in appendix for the airport. The design of the new terminal serves as the central of the gathering space of this entire terminal(Clarke, 2017). The design has been built in a way to meet the needs of airport security and safety standards. Access to the restricted areas is controlled through placement of the security doors and designing of the different concourses(Airport, 2016).

On the other hand, limitations for airport capacities tend to also have an impact on the airport operations and it’s pricing. Economic theory has predicted that when there are limitations placed on airport capacity then the airport fares would be higher for accommodating the increased demand of the passengers(Dender, 2007). The excess demand allows the airlines to increase their fares. In addition, when the capacity of the airport is increased then the demand remains same, additional competition would be created and it would scarce the rents away. Overall, the reduced rent would cause the airfares to fall. However, the consequences of capacity limitations are more worse(Chi, 2009).

If assess, the capacity of Haneda airport then the current airport, the capacity for Haneda is almost full. The movement restriction and the current hourly aircraft movement for departure are shown in exhibit 2 in appendices. It could be seen that the departure slot is almost full during the daytime except for 6:00 and 14:00 to 16:55. However, during the night time the capacity increases as the departure operations decline from 20:00 to 5:55 because of night curfews or the closing of the airports(Airport, 2016). The current ratio of the international passengers is also low at Haneda airport as compared to the domestic passengers however; this has been growing and is estimated to grow in future as well(Dender, 2007). The statistics for the number of passengers is shown in exhibit 3 in appendix.

Critical Assessment of Strategy of Haneda and Narita Airports

The goal of the Japan Airport Terminal Group is to achieve the long-term vision of the government of the country of constructing airports that could bring complete satisfaction for all the visitors and passengers. A medium term business plan has been put forward by the group, to achieve the objectives of the group of becoming the world’s best airport by 2020. The group is already aware of the difficulties it has been facing(JAT, 2016). For instance, the country has increased the influx of the inbound visitors in Japan on the one hand, while on the other hand the uncertainty surrounding the domestic economy of the country is another major problem..........................
