Patent Fili-Krushel agreed to hire the first executive vice-president in the administration of AOL Time Warner, the leading corporate human resources, internal communications, real estate and equipment, as well as other administrative roles for the combined company. She has to figure out how to structure the work, and how to start a relationship with her new boss, CEO Richard Parsons. Two factors complicate the decision. First, AOL Time Warner is experiencing significant internal conflicts and Fili-Krushel stepping into the middle of it. Secondly, Fili-Krushel built his career on the larger line management positions, such as President ABC Network, and has no experience in getting things done without line power. The case sets out the steps it takes to build a reputation and respect in the company, and describes the process of moving the heads of the firm from conflict to cooperation. "Hide
