The September 11th Fund: Accountability and Media Strategy Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

At 8:45 am September 11, 2001 hijacked plane flew into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York. In the next hour, three hijacked planes crashed, one in the South Tower, one at the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania. Lori Slutsky, president of the New York Community Trust, and Ralph Dickerson, president of United Way in New York (UWNYC), watched and listened to their offices Empire State Building, as events unfolded. The two met, and at 5 pm on September 11 created a fund (the "Fund") to support the immediate and long-term needs of people and communities affected by the tragedy. Trust and UWNYC decided to become partners in their response to September 11, for several reasons: their position as the largest city of the charity organization, their relationship with the local non-profit organizations and government agencies, their different donor base, and their history of cooperation. They believe that the mutual fund will have a greater impact and leverage than several small funds and the public would be useful to have a centralized place to donate. Two staffs began on 12 September to address the barrage of questions related to fundraising, distributing money, and in response to the press and the public. Thanks to the direct collaboration of trust and UWNYC, September 11 Fund gave support and services to more than 100,000 people in 47 states and 26 foreign countries, and effective coordination of hundreds of charitable organizations, non-governmental organizations, companies, and dedicated people.
They moved quickly and worked under the scrutiny of the media. Volume of September 11 disaster and the response size made substantial cooperation but also created huge problems.
