The Hazardous Consent Forms Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

The Hazardous Consent Forms  Case Study Solution

Introduction

This case is based on the study that is conducted by the Researcher Knowitall, who decided to study the effects of heroin on social and physiological behaviors. For this study, the researcher chose a sample of 60 pregnant women and their infants. Out of the total sample, half of the sample is addicted and half is non-addicted. The study is designed to study and compare the pregnancy duration, delivery of a child, and development of a baby of both the samples statistically, to identify changing patterns.

Analysis of case study

Dr. Knowitall arranged a study related to the social and physiological effects of heroin with 30 addicted and non-addicted pregnant women and infants. In doing so, Dr. Knowitall was instructed to get a consent form signed by each participant to avoid any ethical issues. However, after two months of study, Knowitall asked the nurses to hide the actual purpose of the study claiming that it could lead to addicted women to face legal issues that were unethical at all. One of the similar studies includes the study of HIV (Human Immune Virus) in sex-workers with issues like; disclosure of private information i.e. disclosing them in front of society and law,  (Official, 2019) concealed purpose of the study and involving subordinates i.e. nurses in our case, in the misconduct by misuse of the authority.

Knowitall's approach is although unethical due to informal and undocumented consent forms, but his claim about legal issues for an addicted women is quite justifiable along with the fact that most of the addicted woman will probably not respond to the consent form considering it as a threat for a lawsuit against them. However, the approach should be modified with a well written informed consent form avoiding any legal issue against the participant along with a warning. No doubt, the consent obtained by nurses is inadequate. The informed consent must include the true purpose of the along with points that avoid any legal action against the participant. It could also include a warning about the legal actions of addicted women.................
