Founded in 1989, Education for America (TFA) was a nonprofit organization that placed qualified graduates in 1000 under-resourced urban and rural schools across the country to teach for two years. The enthusiasm of the founding members inspired thousands of college graduates to take on the mission of the elimination of educational disparities across the country. Applicants for the Fall of 2001 was twice that TFA expected, and applications for spring 2002 will be extremely high. Without drastic efforts to increase the number of placements, however, the organization may not be able to accommodate all admitted applicants. Thus, the national office asked many of its regions - and especially in the Bay Area because of its popularity with the applicants - to accommodate as many new members to the body as possible.
