The research question for my dissertation is “what is the impact of social cohesiveness on employee absenteeism and turnover in an organization”?

The word cohesion has very deep and ancestral roots in business management.The word cohesion is so strong that it can make or break the organizational structure and can alter the business strategy. Cohesion in organization alterminology is explained as group cohesion which means “the willingness of the members of a society to cooperate with each other in order to survive and prosper. “Social cohesion arises when the bonds are created among the social groups and links them as a whole one group. Social cohesiveness is a long facet term which can be understood under the components such as social relations, task relations, perceived unity and emotions. This is a very rarely considered phenomenon in an organization by the managers. And most of the time, managers oversee the graveness of social cohesiveness on work performance of the employees. Mostly managers and the organization see strong cohesion between the employees as a threat to the company’s running policy which is wrong. At the present time, people seek bonding, loyalty and motivation to work pro-actively and stay with the organization. These features of staying in the organization are built by encouraging social cohesions among the employees. Furthermore, the social cohesion with its numerous advantages affect the absenteeism rate in an organization significantly. According to past studies it has been analyzed that whenever the groupsare highly cohesive they tend to take responsibility of each other’s work and consider as a collective body that is aimed to complete the task. This act of taking the responsibility of each other reduces the rate of absentees.Another reason that supports the fact of social cohesiveness as a bridge to reduce absenteeism is thatpeople, when put together, find similarity through mindsets,ethnicbackgrounds, culture and language. These factors make the employees enjoy at the workplace and instead of taking work as “work” they tend to take the responsibility of that and enjoy performing the tasks, which adds to the factors reducing the employee turnover.

The problem was considered because with the development of business science and scope of businesses it has become very crucial for the organizations to maintain their workforce and establish such culture in organizations that guarantees maximum productivity with minimum turnover. Turnover is a big gimmick for an organization; sometimes the organization loses so much by losing just one single employee. Intoday’s time and the times that area about to come, technology will be a commodity for the organization,and the only way the companies can create competitive advantage is by retaining the “brain power” of the company. The organizations have to evolve and emerge into such organizations that they had never been before to change the atmosphere of the workplace and convert it to a better place  where employees get the feeling of owning the company, and that they are willing to work on their own and not by the force applied by the management.

At master level, we are capable enough to think about the thick and thins of working in a workplace where we are supposed to work as machines.This is the level where people decide to make a turning point in their career by developing such approaches that can change the game. The students who complete their Masters directly contribute to the society which can either make the society or move it towards betterment or can make the situation more devastating. Therefore, the thinking and importance of such small yet long lasting effect phenomenon has to be take into consideration before stepping out in the corporate world.This brain storming at master level will surely make better managers that will be able to cope with the changing societal and organizational roles..................
