New Product Development Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Section Two

Key Relationships

Authorities

It is important for UASC to maintain good relations with the local and the central government as they would affect the business of the company. The governments have high influence over the restrictions on the quota systems for importing and exporting the goods for business giants to other countries. Therefore, having close contacts with government agencies, the authorities that regulates taxes, custom officials, and the authorities of ports will provide an additional benefit to UASC.

Customers

The entire dependency of the proposed plan of the company is on its customers. In order to mark success of the business, it is imperative for the company to develop a close interaction with customers regarding their consignments because this particular phase is also crucial for UASC’s customers. A responsible behavior would pretty much sum up the relationship between its customers. Collaborating and sharing best practices with customers is the key towards achieving success for the company.

Employees

UASC shall give prior importance to its employees because they are the stakeholders which help meeting a good relationship with other stakeholders including suppliers and customers. Therefore, emphasis on employee training and motivations shall remain the key business issue for UASC.

Suppliers and Partners

In attaining sustainability for UASC, it shall maintain strong relationship with its suppliers, partners, and distributors. The suppliers and partners shall be made according to their supply chain efficiency and long term relationship patterns.

Communities

Investing in communities and involving the company in community activities is essential in developing good reputation of the company in the eyes of the entire community. The company shall make their community feel that the employees of the company are proud working with the company.

NGO’s

For corporate social responsibility, NGO’s can play an influential role in spreading the awareness of social and environmental issues for UASC. Therefore, making contracts with NGO’s to understand their views is important in order to effectively cater the social and environmental issues.

Key Processes Involved in New Offering

The key process for the new proposed services would start when the UASC fleets and vessels would land in the shipment areas. The first process would include the maneuvering of ships between the berths, whereas, in the second process the berth and de-berth of shipment takes place. The third step involves the placement of cranes besides the ships for the loading and the unloading of the containers. The fourth stem involves the loading and the unloading of containers on the yard. The next step includes the arrival of trucks at the yard and is loaded with their equivalent container. Each size of the container would have its equivalent truck through which it could reach to customers with efficient cost. The next step involves the investigation of the containers by custom officers, whereas, the trucks are then headed off to their destinations at the customer warehouse (Gudelj, et al., 2010).

Processes During and After

UASC is a global shipping company and its current process involves providing shipping services to many global clients in shipping their products from one country to another and also works as a local carrier. The company provides its services through various fleets and vessels and covers up to 200 ports. The company covers most parts of every continent as it has presence in over 75 countries. The aim of the company is to deliver the shipment from one place to another. However, the current business proposal for the company requires the hiring of many trucks that could collect various containers from the warehouse of their customers and bring it to their ship yards. Once the ship is loaded and utilized up to its fullest potential, then it is shipped to another country. When it is landed in another county, the company unloads the shipment and the UASC’s trucks arrive to carry the containers to their respective customers. Therefore, the entire process is now carried out by UASC which earns the entire revenues collected by the company.

Identify the Channels

The channel for communication that can be identified for the market of the product is through the referral system as the company is currently involved in the shipment of many products for companies from one place to another. Only the difference is that the company has been delivering the containers on its vessels and fleets. Therefore, the company would maintain the global key clients through referrals due to the similarity of the business. However, the second most important channel for communication is through e-commerce. This channel is most widely accepted for different businesses, as similar companies in the same industry have also been using the similar approach. Social media should be used to maintain interaction with business to business dealing (Boye, 2012)..................................
