Moving Mountains: The Case of the Antamina Mining Company (A) Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Company Antamina Mining (Compania Minera Antamina, or CMA) is the world's third largest producer of zinc, 7 copper, and the biggest collaboration for both minerals. This is a Peruvian company whose activity is located between 4200 and 4700 m above sea level, is a leader in the field of environmental and social responsibility. Although the CMA has been a fairly new company (exploration and construction of mining operations took place between 1997 and 2001, in which the production phase began), we had to face a number of challenges, in order to be economically viable organization that is both socially and environmentally responsible. Solving these problems involves the development of institutional capacity (conflict resolution, management of adverse social conditions, multiculturalism, self-learning and innovation), which usually appear much later in the evolution of the company. Shows some common problems faced by managers taking part in large-scale initiatives. CMA leaders worked quickly and with a high risk of context to make quick decisions, the consequences of which will have a lasting impact, as they will determine the type of relationship that the company will support a variety of stakeholders. To make these decisions, they have to set priorities among at least three different logics: i) that the construction and production, where tight deadlines, technical criteria for engineers, and cost reduction prevails, II) environmental logic, where in addition to caution prevails impact assessment and active international community of stakeholders and III) community-based logic, which coexist with the indigenous and especially poor rural families directly affected by the project must obtain a so-called "social license." This stage took place in a context in which the CMA has been pressing the need to secure funding from international banks. "Hide
