Managing a Public Image: Rob Thomas Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Managing a Public Image: Rob Thomas Case Solution

Rob Thomas describes some of the challenges he's faced as a white, middle-aged man who is the managing director of a mid size consulting firm where he was dedicated in creating racial diversity as well as balance between the gender of the staff members. As he did not want to risk the disapproval of any constituency, Thoma was shocked as he had to appear as an infallible and rational leader.

When an able but undistinguished female consultant comes up for associate, Thomas decided to take a stand, but his attempts to encourage her failed. Ultimately, Thomas questions whether he has been an effective leader in support of a cause about which he cares greatly. Thomas reflects on his picture concerns, questioning whether they have undermined his ability to exercise leadership effectively.
