Longbow Capital Partners is value-oriented long/short hedge fund concentrating on stocks in the energy sector. In January Longbow Capital made investment in NiSource, a Fortune 500 firm that owns a diverse portfolio of controlled energy businesses. In late 2014, Longbow was deciding whether to maintain its position in NiSource.
To make this choice, students must perform a discounted dividend analysis to determine the fundamental value of the stock of NiSource. Pupils are additionally asked to perform a sum-of-the-parts determination to measure the consequences of the current proposal of NiSource to pursue a tax-advantaged spin off its pipeline business.
