While drinking water is of paramount importance, the source of the water also has to be a consideration in Hawaii. Water is the lifeblood of the islands. The major water supply is the Honolulu Harbor, the second largest in the United States.

The Honolulu Harbor is divided into two sections, the north end, referred to as Haleakala. This area receives its water from the east side of the ocean. When storms come, these water sources are affected. It is very important that there is proper water quality in this area.

When hurricanes hit, they typically do not make direct contact with the North End of the harbor. They normally touch down in the East End of the harbor. On average, there are over fifty to seventy hurricanes every year in the North End. It is critical that there is a backup water source in the form of a pipeline system.

When water flows into the harbor, it turns into the ocean. The storm water flowing into the harbor tends to enter this water first and therefore is the most contaminated. There are many different types of pollutants, contaminants, and gases that flow into the harbor from the ocean.

This is also referred to as beach water. This is extremely dirty water, and all of it has to be filtered and treated to remove harmful contaminants. There are three major types of filtration systems for this type of water. These include reverse osmosis, distillation, and ultraviolet light.

The Honolulu Harbor is another large body of water that receives its water from the ocean. Again, the runoff from this ocean enters the harbor as well. The problem is the runoff from the ocean is polluted. This type of water contains chemicals such as prescription drugs, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, and hormones.

Heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and other potentially harmful chemicals are present in this water. This is the reason why so many doctors are recommending that they be used in water treatment systems. When disinfection byproducts are created during the process of distillation, these are one of the pollutants found in this type of water.

As part of this case study, we will be looking at the specifics of the storm water in the harbor. The water begins to flow into a channel that is going to run through the middle of the harbor. The channel is set up to allow the water to flow through but to also allow the river channels to be able to flow through.

Another way that we will be able to get our eyes on the storm water, is that when the rain water begins to flow into the channel, the channel will stop. This is so that the channel does not become blocked. What we find is that much of the storm water begins to wash into the channel with debris from a nearby highway.

This river is known as the Kohala River and is only six feet wide at its widest point. The result is that when the storm water begins to flow, it picks up a lot of dirt and debris that is washed onto the roadway from the storm water. There is some help in knowing that some rain water treatment systems come with a filtering system that can remove many of the contaminants from the storm water.
