Good Capital and Better World Books (B): A Better World for Investing Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

The goal of this instance will be to pioneer the topic of publicly responsible investing from both the investor and investee outlook. The pupils will walk away with an understanding of: 1) the way to assess a portfolio company on a social/environmental mission as well as on traditional financial standards and 2) what factors should be top of mind for a social venture contemplating accepting an equity investment.

In 2007, Good Capital is prepared to make its first increase equity investment in a for-profit social business and Selke is contemplating Better World Books as the business's primary objective. Selke if its social and environmental mission can be preserved upon a liquidation event, and must appraise whether or not the business is a fiscally sound investment. If the investment is proceeded with by Good Capital, Selke must additionally rework some of Better World Books' current procedures, including fine-tuning the philanthropic giving strategy that is the primary component of its social mission.
