"De Kuyper Royal Distillers, is a 300 year old family firm in the Netherlands and creates the biggest variety of liqueurs in the world. The firm has ever been owned and commanded by the De Kuyper family. As managing director Bob de Kuyper, the tenth generation to own and run the company, retired from his position in 2009 and an outsider, Ben van Doesburgh, was brought in as the interim managing director. The case places the student in the position of Marc de Kuyper, the oldest son of Bob de Kuyper and begins in January 2010. Marc, at the age of 31, works for an external company in a junior marketing place.

He is attempting to determine the way to convince the family company's supervisory board, as well as his father, that he has the capabilities to finally take a leadership role in the family business, and has a powerful desire to become the next managing director of the family firm. However, up to this stage, Marc has not done well in school or with his profession. As a result, his family along with the supervisory board of the firm are doubtful about his leadership capabilities. He possess great passion for the family business does, though, and is quite creative and entrepreneurial. The task for the students is to provide guidance on the series of De Kuyper Royal Distillers, whether there's a future for Marc at the family business and what he can do, if anything, in the succession process."
